Choosing Healing over Medicating

So, how do most wounded men handle their pain? How do we cope with the emotional or physical trauma we have experienced?

Let’s explore this further:

Let’s review how most wounded men handle their pain.  The following are three ways that we cope with the emotional or physical trauma that we have experienced.

  • Recall what we talked about in ‘The Poser’ lesson.
  • We simply put on a fake identity because we aren’t sure about who we really are or whether we have what it takes.

We do this in a few ways:

  • We seek the approval of others.
  • We try to please people. Especially if we were rejected or abandoned.
  • We seek to achieve things to make us feel important, to get the approval of our father.

Some common examples are:

  • Sex
  • Drugs and alcohol
  • Gambling
  • Busyness
  • Pleasure-seeking
  • Religion
  • Hobbies- fitness, motorcycles
  • Work
  • Internet (Social Media)

Reflection Question:

How have you been medicating in order to hide your wounded heart?

We have a choice to make. Most of us deny the wounds, or we minimize them and keep them stuffed deep inside. We can continue to do this.

Or, we can identify the wounds and ask Jesus to heal and restore our hearts from the damage that the wounds have inflicted on us.

Important Scripture from this section:

LUKE 4:18 NKJV

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed."
